The enchanting symphony of bees buzzing\, birds singing\, and butterflies dancing among vibrant blossoms creates an atmosphere of serenity and inspiration. It is as though the garden itself whispers to us that diversity\, both in nature and in society\, is not only good—it is essential. \nDiversity as a Cornerstone\nThe diversity in this garden is reflected in every corner\, every shade of green\, and every fluttering wing. Combining edible plants\, fruits\, herbs\, and flowers\, it creates a space that is both sustainable and beautiful\, making your yard a productive source of nutrient-dense\, super local\, and delicious fruits\, vegetables\, and herbs. \nParticipants will have the opportunity to learn about approaches to growing their own food at home within steps from the kitchen. Topics will include efficient and sustainable garden layouts\, developing good soil\, composting\, soil modification\, fertilization\, \nplanting according to the season\, and eco-friendly and sustainable gardening practices. \nABOUT THE SPEAKER \nJose German-Gomez is well known as a local environmental activist and an educator in sustainable\, eco-friendly communities and organic gardening. His lecture “Gardening for Life” has been presented in many New Jersey communities as well as in the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. Jose is an Essex County Certified Master Gardener and a Certified Rutgers Environmental Steward. \nJose is the author of the “Gardening for Life” column in the Montclair Local newspaper\, where he writes about environmental issues\, growing your own food\, and eco-friendly gardening. He also teaches about urban farming at the Pine Street Community Garden. \nHe is co-founder of the Montclair Backyard Habitat Project\, which is affiliated with the National Wildlife Federation. DESCRIPTION:Spring is here\, and we are excited about the 7th gardening season of the NEEC. Our volunteers are very enthusiastic and eager to meet the new challenge of exceeding our 2021 produce record. \nAs in the last two years\, we will start working at the 94 Pine Street Community Garden at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. We have a lot of things to do in advance in our 16 associated community gardens and environmental projects. Let’s get started! \nARE YOU LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES? \nNEEC Community Gardens and Environmental Projects: \n\nSanctuary Demonstration Community Garden\, 40 South Fullerton Avenue\, Montclair\, NJ 07042.Basic regular tasks: a) Planting; b) Filling the rain barrel; c) Watering; d) Harvesting.\n\n\nOccasionally tasks: a) Adding soil to the beds; b) Adding compost; c) Weeding; d) Preparing the garden for the winter. Note: Filling the rain barrel\, needs to be coordinated with J. German\n\nCurrently Growing: Planting in progress \n\nMaster Gardeners opportunities to oversee the project and lead the volunteers – Twice a week for 1.5 hours – Two Master Gardeners can take one shift each.\n\n \n\nCrane Pak Demonstration Garden\, Glenridge Avenue\, Montclair\, NJ 07042. Basic regular tasks: a) Planting; b) Watering; and c) Harvesting.\n\n\nOccasionally tasks: a) Adding soil to the beds; b) Adding compost; c) Weeding; d) Preparing the garden for the winter. SUMMARY:Edible Landscapes Workshop
DESCRIPTION:ADULT SCHOOL \nWINTER 2022 CLASSES\nAbout the workshop \nEdible landscaping is a modern version of the World War II Victory Gardens. Combining edible plants\, fruits\, herbs\, and flowers\, it creates a space that is both sustainable and beautiful\, making your yard a productive source of nutrient-dense\, super local\, and delicious fruits\, vegetables\, and herbs. \nParticipants will have the opportunity to learn about approaches to growing their own food at home within steps from the kitchen. Topics will include efficient and sustainable garden layouts\, developing good soil\, composting\, and seasoning planting. \nAbout the speaker  \nJose German-Gomez is well known as a local environmental activist and an educator in sustainable\, eco-friendly communities and organic gardening. His lecture “Gardening for Life” has been presented in many New Jersey communities as well as in the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. Jose is an Essex County Certified Master Gardener and a Certified Rutgers Environmental Steward. \nJose is the author of the “Gardening for Life” column in the Montclair Local newspaper\, where he writes about environmental issues\, growing your own food\, and eco-friendly gardening. He also teaches about urban farming at the Pine Street Community Garden. \nHe is co-founder of the Montclair Backyard Habitat Project\, which is affiliated with the National Wildlife Federation. SUMMARY:Nutrition and Cooking Demo - May 15\, 2021
DESCRIPTION:May is the month of both National High Blood Pressure Education and National Stroke Awareness. We will offer a virtual class on nutrition education while doing a cooking demonstration – anyone can join\, regardless 0f their culinary skills! \nJoin Armando Cruz in creating a heart healthy dish while he teaches the benefits of making healthier lifestyle choices. We will use herbs and produce that are affordable\, filling and in season. The recipe for this hearty meal will be shared with participants prior to the class so that we can all cook together. \n\nArmando is a Senior Nutrition Educator at the Community Foodbank of New Jersey (CFBNJ). He grew up in Portugal\, where he helped tend the family farm. When he moved to New Jersey\, he became a backyard gardener and an advocate for urban agriculture and environmental preservation. He hopes to encourage communities to grow as much food as they can with the space available to them. By raising awareness and offering workshops like these\, Armando hopes to empower individuals to create positive\, sustainable change. \n  \nArmando Cruz\, is an environmentalist\, community activist\, and animal and human rights advocate. He is a Senior Nutrition Educator at the Community Food Bank of New Jersey (CFBNJ). He is also a founder of the New Jersey Climate Save\, which has mobilized community residents to collect thousands of pounds of trash\, preventing further damage to public parks\, rivers\, and oceans. Cruz has conducted recycling classes for youth groups\, organized peaceful environmental and animal rights actions\, and is working to create mini community food gardens in public spaces.
