The enchanting symphony of bees buzzing\, birds singing\, and butterflies dancing among vibrant blossoms creates an atmosphere of serenity and inspiration. It is as though the garden itself whispers to us that diversity\, both in nature and in society\, is not only good—it is essential. \nDiversity as a Cornerstone\nThe diversity in this garden is reflected in every corner\, every shade of green\, and every fluttering wing. Plants of varied species stand side by side\, each contributing to the ecosystem in its own way. Pollinators—from honeybees to native bees—work tirelessly to ensure that flowers bloom and fruits ripen\, while birds and butterflies add their colorful presence to the landscape. This diversity thrives because no single element overpowers another. In this little oasis\, the balance among species ensures sustainability and growth. \nA Haven for Wildlife\nFor pollinators\, this garden is a paradise. Bees find plentiful nectar in its flowers\, their buzzing forming a gentle melody that fills the air. Birds\, including sparrows\, warblers\, and hummingbirds\, find shelter and sustenance here as well. The Newark\, NJ\, native and former Family Crisis Intervention Specialist\, with undergraduate & graduate Social Work degrees from Rutgers University\, is National Wildlife Federation’s NY Metro Director of Conservation Partnerships. He also serves as NJ Progressive Equitable Energy Coalition (NJPEEC) Chair\, Southern Burlington County NAACP Environmental & Climate Justice Chair\, and NJ Reparations Council Health Equity Committee Member. Recent former roles include NJ State Conference NAACP ECJ Chair\, Cancer Free Economy Network National Building Power Team member\, and SBC NAACP Immediate Past President. His most important and most cherished role of all is being his daughter’s father.\n\nPresentation: “Operation: Justice” Environmental injustices are the result of systemic coordinated actions. Environmental Justice is the result of coordinated collective passion. In this presentation Marcus Sibley explores the relevance and role of strategy in environmental advocacy.\n  \n \nJASON GRABOSKY\, PhD BIO: \nDr Grabosky is a Professor of Urban and Community Forestry at Rutgers University\, School of Environmental and Biological Sciences.  He is a writer and educator\, cited over 2000 times in Google Scholar.  He served as Director of the Center for Resilient Landscapes\, a joint venture of Rutgers and the USDA Forest Service.  Dr. Grabosky received his doctorate in Ornamental Horticulture from Cornell University and served for six years as Editor-in-Chief of the International Society of Arboriculture’s (ISA) research journal: Arboriculture & Urban Forestry. He was recently elected to serve on the ISA Board of Directors in 2023.\n\n\nPresentation: “Sharing space: Trees\, people and the developed landscapes of New Jersey.”  New Jersey can boast of an incredibly diverse listing of tree species which can variously provide canopy in what might be called an urban forest structure.  But questions can develop in a time where many folks do not even recognize the differences between the trees\, much less how they might deal with a rapidly changing environment.   We’ll chat about urban forestry\, where folks can engage in positive actions to impact their community\, and how we might look at service life for the trees in a municipality (publicly or privately held). \nWith a little historic perspective\, and a lot of creativity\, we can produce the values of longevity\, service and resilience in our vegetation within urban spaces in balance with the risks of investing in the living components of our communities.  Those choices are not in opposition with our build infrastructure\, if we choose to invest in integrated solutions versus exclusionary designs for single use simplicity. \n\n\n\nDONNA MERRILL BIO:\n\nDonna Merrill: Donna is the founder and President of the Board of Directors of the Pollinator Pathway\, which unites landowners across the country in creating public and private pesticide-free corridors of native plants for pollinating insects and birds. She has certification in Landscape Design from the NY Botanical Gardens\, and her conservation training includes studies in Sustainability Practices at Columbia University\, Land Protection Strategies at Bard College\, and Forest and Wildlife Conservation at the Yale University Coverts Project. Donna has been a leader in several Connecticut-based conservation bodies and is a Director of the Norwalk River Watershed Association.\n\nPresentation: “Pollinator Pathway – Be on It!” Native pollinators face mounting challenges from a combination of habitat fragmentation and climate change. This presentation will explore how we can mitigate this problem and help to rescue these essential creatures by creating corridors of pollinator-sustaining native plants to connect habitat and facilitate migration. This is a community event that you will want to be part of. The Episcopal Church of St. James is partnering with the NEEC to host this event in their front yard. \nJoin local environmentalists and community activists in an outdoor event with environmental displays. \nCome and learn about gardening for pollinators and butterflies\, native plants\, edible landscapes\, community gardens\, and volunteer opportunities. DESCRIPTION:The Northeast Earth Coalition (NEEC) invites you to join its 2022 Earth Day Celebration from April 16-23\, 2022\, for a week of events on the theme of restoring our planet. This year’s celebration will be a combination of virtual events and small gatherings due to the ongoing COVID crisis. \nParticipants can join from anywhere in New Jersey\, the country – or the world! You can meet virtually with regional community leaders and groups that will be sharing their environmental projects\, such as local food and community gardens\, eco-friendly gardening\, sustainable communities\, alternative transportation\, renewable energy\, clean air and water\, and climate change activism. \nJoin the NEEC to Celebrate! \nWe will kick off the celebration virtually via Zoom at 10AM on April 16th and will continue marking the occasion with events until April 23rd. \nShare Your Project! \nWe invite you to submit to the NEEC a short (1-5 minutes) videoclip highlighting an environmental project you are working on\, either at home or at the community level. \nProjects might relate to wildlife habitat\, local food production\, energy conservation\, renewable energy\, pollinator gardens\, conserving water\, protecting waterways\, reducing waste\, environmental justice\, environmental activism\, sustainable transportation\, etc. – any action aimed at preserving and restoring the environment. \nAlthough the NEEC is based in New Jersey\, we are accepting projects from anywhere in the world. He has written or co-written 11 books. The latest is Principles of a Pluralist Commonwealth (2017).  He is a public intellectual who has testified before Congress\, been featured in TV documentaries\, has written for and been profiled by mainstream and progressive media alike. \nMelissa Miles\, Executive Director\, New Jersey Environmental Justice Alliance (Newark\, NJ):  Environmental Justice in New Jersey \nMelissa Miles is as award-winning grassroots activist and organizer living in an Environmental Justice Community in Newark\, New Jersey. NJEJA was part of a coalition that worked to have the nation’s strongest law to protect overburdened communities from pollutants enacted in New Jersey (S232\, 2020). She is also a member of many state\, national and international environmental groups\, such as the New Jersey Environmental Justice Advisory Council\, responsible for advising state agencies on issues of environmental justice. \nJose Aguto\, Executive Director\, Catholic Climate Covenant (Washington\, DC):  How Pope Francis’ Encyclical\, Laudato Si\, Inspired Sustainability and Climate Action in the United States \nJose Aguto leads policy development that helps guide the US Catholic Church’s response to climate change. A key aspect of the Covenant’s policy is to inspire action on climate change as a moral and non-partisan call. His work has contributed to bipartisan caucuses and legislation which are creating a politically viable foundation for meaningful climate action. \nAmy Tuininga\, Director\, PSEG Institute for Sustainability Studies\, Montclair State University (Montclair\, NJ):  The Social Impact of Green Teams in Local Communities \nAmy Tuininga works to create opportunities for students\, faculty\, and a wide range of stakeholders in corporations\, non-profits\, start-ups\, and government organizations to address and advance environmental\, social\, and economic sustainability.
