SUMMARY:Garden Tour - A Magical Sanctuary in Downtown Montclair
DESCRIPTION:Where Nature\, Wildlife\, and Humans Thrive Together\nThere exists a unique place in downtown Montclair\, a space that transcends labels and definitions. You can call it “a garden\,” “a wildlife habitat\,” a sanctuary\, or a nature refuge. However\, to me\, it is simply a magical place\, a harmonious blend of ecology and humanity where life flourishes in its purest form. \nThe Harmony of Nature and Humanity\nThis garden is a testament to the beauty of coexistence—a small\, green refuge where nature\, wildlife\, and humans interact in perfect balance. The enchanting symphony of bees buzzing\, birds singing\, and butterflies dancing among vibrant blossoms creates an atmosphere of serenity and inspiration. It is as though the garden itself whispers to us that diversity\, both in nature and in society\, is not only good—it is essential. \nDiversity as a Cornerstone\nThe diversity in this garden is reflected in every corner\, every shade of green\, and every fluttering wing. Plants of varied species stand side by side\, each contributing to the ecosystem in its own way. Pollinators—from honeybees to native bees—work tirelessly to ensure that flowers bloom and fruits ripen\, while birds and butterflies add their colorful presence to the landscape. This diversity thrives because no single element overpowers another. In this little oasis\, the balance among species ensures sustainability and growth. \nA Haven for Wildlife\nFor pollinators\, this garden is a paradise. Bees find plentiful nectar in its flowers\, their buzzing forming a gentle melody that fills the air. Butterflies\, with their dazzling colors and intricate patterns\, glide effortlessly from one bloom to another. Birds\, including sparrows\, warblers\, and hummingbirds\, find shelter and sustenance here as well. The garden has become their sanctuary—a place free from the pressures of urbanization and habitat loss. \nThe Role of Native Plants\nOne of the secrets to the garden’s success is its use of native plants (Over 170 species from NJ\, PA\, NY and New England!). These species\, adapted to the local environment\, provide vital resources for the area’s wildlife. From milkweed that sustains monarch butterflies to coneflowers that attract goldfinches\, each native plant plays a pivotal role in supporting ecological balance. The presence of native flora also eliminates the need for artificial fertilizers and pesticides\, ensuring the garden remains a true refuge for all its inhabitants. \nHuman Connection to the Garden\nWhile this sanctuary belongs to nature\, it is also a place for humans to reconnect with the natural world. Walking through its paths\, one feels a sense of peace and wonder—a reminder that the urban hustle can coexist with moments of tranquility. Have you seen the “Secret Garden?” People  gather to observe the beauty of wildlife\, children marvel at the fluttering of butterfly wings\, and artists find inspiration in the interplay of light and shadow. \nEducation and Awareness\nThe garden serves as more than a place of beauty; it is a living classroom. Visitors learn about the importance of pollinators and the role of biodiversity in sustaining ecosystems. Simple signs and guided tours (When available\, since is a private home) provide insights into the delicate interdependence of plants\, animals\, and humans. This knowledge instills a sense of responsibility\, encouraging individuals to adopt practices that protect and nurture the environment. \nThe Garden as a Model for Urban Spaces\nWhat makes this garden truly magical is its ability to exist in downtown Montclair—a space often defined by concrete\, steel\, and the rhythm of urban life. It demonstrates that green spaces can flourish even in densely populated areas and that they can serve as sanctuaries for both wildlife and humans. As cities face increasing challenges related to climate change and habitat destruction\, this garden stands as a beacon of hope and a model for sustainable urban development. \nCreating More Sanctuaries\nThe success of this garden inspires the possibility of creating similar refuges in other cities. By incorporating native plants\, designing habitats for wildlife\, and promoting community involvement\, urban areas can be transformed into greener\, healthier places. Gardens like this can become focal points for education\, conservation\, and community-building\, reminding us of our interconnectedness with the natural world. \nA Call to Action\nAs visitors leave this magical sanctuary\, they carry with them more than memories—they take with them the seeds of inspiration. This garden challenges us to rethink our relationship with the environment. It calls on us to protect biodiversity\, to create spaces where nature can thrive\, and to embrace the idea that harmony among species can be achieved. \nWhy This Garden Matters\nIn an era where climate change and habitat destruction threaten countless species\, places like this garden are more important than ever. They serve as reminders that small actions—whether planting native flowers or reducing pesticide use—can have profound impacts. They show that humans have the ability to coexist with nature in a way that benefits all. \nThe Magic of Montclair’s Garden\nUltimately\, this garden in downtown Montclair is more than just a place. It is an idea—a vision of what the world can be when we embrace diversity\, balance\, and coexistence. It is a sanctuary where pollinators\, birds\, butterflies\, and humans come together\, each contributing to the thriving ecosystem. It is also a very productive source of food to sustain the family\, and local food programs. And it is\, without doubt\, a magical place that inspires hope and renewal.

The Newark\, NJ\, native and former Family Crisis Intervention Specialist\, with undergraduate & graduate Social Work degrees from Rutgers University\, is National Wildlife Federation’s NY Metro Director of Conservation Partnerships. He also serves as NJ Progressive Equitable Energy Coalition (NJPEEC) Chair\, Southern Burlington County NAACP Environmental & Climate Justice Chair\, and NJ Reparations Council Health Equity Committee Member. Recent former roles include NJ State Conference NAACP ECJ Chair\, Cancer Free Economy Network National Building Power Team member\, and SBC NAACP Immediate Past President. His most important and most cherished role of all is being his daughter’s father.\n\nPresentation: “Operation: Justice” Environmental injustices are the result of systemic coordinated actions. Environmental Justice is the result of coordinated collective passion. In this presentation Marcus Sibley explores the relevance and role of strategy in environmental advocacy.\n  \n \nJASON GRABOSKY\, PhD BIO: \nDr Grabosky is a Professor of Urban and Community Forestry at Rutgers University\, School of Environmental and Biological Sciences.  He is a writer and educator\, cited over 2000 times in Google Scholar.  He served as Director of the Center for Resilient Landscapes\, a joint venture of Rutgers and the USDA Forest Service.  Dr. Grabosky received his doctorate in Ornamental Horticulture from Cornell University and served for six years as Editor-in-Chief of the International Society of Arboriculture’s (ISA) research journal: Arboriculture & Urban Forestry. He was recently elected to serve on the ISA Board of Directors in 2023.\n\n\nPresentation: “Sharing space: Trees\, people and the developed landscapes of New Jersey.”  New Jersey can boast of an incredibly diverse listing of tree species which can variously provide canopy in what might be called an urban forest structure.  But questions can develop in a time where many folks do not even recognize the differences between the trees\, much less how they might deal with a rapidly changing environment.   We’ll chat about urban forestry\, where folks can engage in positive actions to impact their community\, and how we might look at service life for the trees in a municipality (publicly or privately held). \nWith a little historic perspective\, and a lot of creativity\, we can produce the values of longevity\, service and resilience in our vegetation within urban spaces in balance with the risks of investing in the living components of our communities.  Those choices are not in opposition with our build infrastructure\, if we choose to invest in integrated solutions versus exclusionary designs for single use simplicity. \n\n\n\nDONNA MERRILL BIO:\n\nDonna Merrill: Donna is the founder and President of the Board of Directors of the Pollinator Pathway\, which unites landowners across the country in creating public and private pesticide-free corridors of native plants for pollinating insects and birds. She has certification in Landscape Design from the NY Botanical Gardens\, and her conservation training includes studies in Sustainability Practices at Columbia University\, Land Protection Strategies at Bard College\, and Forest and Wildlife Conservation at the Yale University Coverts Project. Donna has been a leader in several Connecticut-based conservation bodies and is a Director of the Norwalk River Watershed Association.\n\nPresentation: “Pollinator Pathway – Be on It!” Native pollinators face mounting challenges from a combination of habitat fragmentation and climate change. This presentation will explore how we can mitigate this problem and help to rescue these essential creatures by creating corridors of pollinator-sustaining native plants to connect habitat and facilitate migration. Find how you can take part in this effort in a local park\, a neglected roadside\, or your own backyard. \n\nCONFERENCE PROGRAM: \n8th Conference Program – final version \nHOST AND CO-HOST: \n        \nPARTICIPATING ORGANIZATIONS: \n         \n          \n             \n            \n           \n          \n                         \n  \n  \n     \n \nReserve your ticket here: \n  \n  \n \n \nThe Northeast Earth Coalition is a 501 (c)(3) Tax Exempt Volunteer Driven Nonprofit Organization \nPRESS PLEASE CONTACT US AT: \nConference@neearth.org \n
