SUMMARY:Unveiling Ceremony of Crane Park New Sign
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to the official unveiling of the new interactive sign for Crane Park Pollinator Garden. This beautiful sign is a Montclair first\, with links to information about the plants in the garden. \nCrane Park Demonstration Garden Project: \n\nDemonstration gardens utilize public spaces to illustrate approaches to gardening. SUMMARY:Virtual Event: Earth Day 50th Anniversary Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, April 18\, 2020 at 10 AM (Opening local event) \nWednesday\, April 22\, 2020 at 10AM (Worldwide official event) \nLocation: Virtual celebration in Montclair\, NJ\, USA \nJoin the NEEC for a virtual Earth Day Celebration! \nFrom New Jersey and beyond\, please join us virtually via Zoom at 10AM on April 18 for a kick-off celebration of the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. We will continue marking the occasion until April 22 by sharing videoclips of projects people are carrying out to protect and restore the Earth. \nWe invite you to submit to the NEEC a short (1-3 minute) videoclip highlighting an environmental project you are working on\, either at home or at the community level. The climate crisis is the official theme of the Worldwide Earth Day Celebration\, but we recognize that most local environmental projects address the climate crisis directly or indirectly. Projects might relate to wildlife habitat\, local food production\, energy conservation\, renewable energy\, pollinator gardens\, conserving water\, protecting waterways\, reducing waste\, environmental justice\, environmental activism\, sustainable transportation\, etc. – any action aimed at preserving and restoring the environment. \nAlthough the NEEC is based in New Jersey\, we are interested in projects from anywhere in the world. \nThe NEEC will select clips to share online between April 18 and April 22. \nThis is an excellent opportunity to highlight the work you are doing and inspire others to take action. \nThe deadline for submissions is April 15. Please send your submission as an email attachment to Info@neearth.org \nEarth Day 2020 theme: Climate Action \nEvery year the Earth Day Network\, as organizers of the original Earth Day\, selects an environmental priority to engage the global public. \nThe enormous challenges – but also the vast opportunities – of acting on climate change have distinguished the issue as the most pressing topic for the 50th anniversary year. At the end of 2020\, nations will be expected to increase their national commitments to the 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change\, so the time is now for citizens to call for greater global ambition to tackle our climate crisis. \nClimate change represents the biggest challenge to the future of humanity and the life-support systems that make our world habitable. Unless every country in the world steps up – and steps up with urgency and ambition – we are consigning current and future generations to a dangerous future. \nEarth Day 2020 will be far more than a day. It must be a historic moment when citizens of the world rise up in a united call for the creativity\, innovation\, ambition\, and bravery that we need to meet our climate crisis and seize the enormous opportunities of a zero-carbon future. \nFor additional information & volunteer opportunities\, please e-mail us at: Info@neearth.org or check our calendar for other events and workshops.

Chief among his research goals is to better understand the many ways insects interact with plants and how such interactions determine the diversity of animal communities. \nTallamy’s award-winning first book Bringing Nature Home: How Native Plants Sustain Wildlife in Our Gardens\, published in 2007\, made the case for the key ecological role of native plants. His revolutionary 2020 follow-up book\, Nature’s Best Hope\, presents a grass-roots approach to conservation\, emphasizing how anyone with access to a piece of land can take action to create essential habitat for insects and the wildlife that depends on them. \nHis message is solution-based action\, where small efforts by many people in their yards or local public spaces can create new ecological networks connecting populations of plants and animals so they will have the resilience to survive and thrive. \nTallamy coined the term Homegrown National Park™ to describe this movement. According to Tallamy\, “Our National Parks\, no matter how grand in scale\, are too small and separated from one another to preserve species to the levels needed. Thus\, the concept for Homegrown National Park\, a bottom-up call-to-action to restore habitat where we live and work\, and to a lesser extent where we farm and graze\, extending national parks to our yards and communities. \n“In the past\, we have asked one thing of our gardens: that they be pretty. Now they have to support life\, sequester carbon\, feed pollinators and manage water.”\n— DOUG TALLAMY \nFebruary 11th at 7pm – Conference Opening Ceremony – Speaker: \n\nJose German-Gomez\, Founder and CEO of the Northeast Earth Coalition\n\n \nFirst presentation\, at 7:15pm: Northeast Pollinator Pathways – Speaker: \n\nMary Ellen Lemay\, graduate of Yale University in Environmental Management\, founder of the Eco-Sites\, LLC\, and passionate advocate for pollinator preservation.\n\n \nFebruary 12th\, at 7pm – Impact of Community Gardens\, Environmentalism and Social Justice. SUMMARY:THE IMPORTANCE OF SOIL FERTILITY & APPROPRIATE USE OF FERTILIZATION
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nEven if you think that you have a green thumb\, this webinar will provide you alternatives to keep the soil of your garden healthy and fertilized using the appropriate method. \nMost of the time\, the average person treats the soil “like dirt”. A wise farmer/gardener will care for the soil because he/she knows that humanity  is dependent on the top 6 inches  of soil. In the plant-animal-soil continuum\, soil is often neglected because it does not indicate stress in an obvious way. Animals and plants show physical symptoms but the soil must be looked at more carefully to monitor good health. Soil is a living system\, with millions of microorganisms that keep the soil healthy. Just like other living things\, soil breathes and needs air\, water to stay alive. \nFertilization is an important issue because it is needed in order to produce enough food for the increasing population from the decreasing cultivated land\, but too much or  inappropriate use can be detrimental to the environment. Part of the debates about fertilizers discuss “man-made” or “chemical” fertilizers as compared to “organic farming”. There are many misconceptions about all three terms. This webinar will look at the various aspects of fertilization so a broader understanding will lead to better soil health and fertilization and results. \nThis is a free webinar\, but if you would like to support the program\, please click here:
