SUMMARY:GARDENING FOR POLLINATORS
DESCRIPTION:Learn the basics for creating a beautiful garden with year-around interest that supports beleaguered pollinators. \nPollinators play an essential ecological role\, but they are in trouble. There is much you can do in your own yard to throw them a lifeline. A well-designed pollinator garden will add beauty\, interest\, and ecological value to your property. Participants can join from anywhere in the country – or the world! \nTo become a sponsor or request program details\, please e-mail us at: Info@neearth.org \nKeynote Speaker: Dr. Douglas Tallamy \n   \nThe Northeast Earth Coalition is honored to have Dr. Douglas Tallamy as our keynote speaker for the 6th Acting Locally for a More Sustainable World Conference. \nDr. Tallamy is a professor in the Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware\, where he has authored eighty research articles and has taught Insect Taxonomy\, Behavioral Ecology\, Humans and Nature\, and other courses for thirty-two years. Chief among his research goals is to better understand the many ways insects interact with plants and how such interactions determine the diversity of animal communities. \nTallamy’s award-winning first book Bringing Nature Home: How Native Plants Sustain Wildlife in Our Gardens\, published in 2007\, made the case for the key ecological role of native plants. His revolutionary 2020 follow-up book\, Nature’s Best Hope\, presents a grass-roots approach to conservation\, emphasizing how anyone with access to a piece of land can take action to create essential habitat for insects and the wildlife that depends on them. \nHis message is solution-based action\, where small efforts by many people in their yards or local public spaces can create new ecological networks connecting populations of plants and animals so they will have the resilience to survive and thrive. \nTallamy coined the term Homegrown National Park™ to describe this movement. According to Tallamy\, “Our National Parks\, no matter how grand in scale\, are too small and separated from one another to preserve species to the levels needed. Thus\, the concept for Homegrown National Park\, a bottom-up call-to-action to restore habitat where we live and work\, and to a lesser extent where we farm and graze\, extending national parks to our yards and communities. \n“In the past\, we have asked one thing of our gardens: that they be pretty. Now they have to support life\, sequester carbon\, feed pollinators and manage water.”\n— DOUG TALLAMY \nFebruary 11th at 7pm – Conference Opening Ceremony – Speaker: \n\nJose German-Gomez\, Founder and CEO of the Northeast Earth Coalition\n\n \nFirst presentation\, at 7:15pm: Northeast Pollinator Pathways – Speaker: \n\nMary Ellen Lemay\, graduate of Yale University in Environmental Management\, founder of the Eco-Sites\, LLC\, and passionate advocate for pollinator preservation.\n\n \nFebruary 12th\, at 7pm – Impact of Community Gardens\, Environmentalism and Social Justice. Speakers:\n\nLana Mustafa\, environmentalist\, urban farmer\, social justice activist\, and educator.\nTobias Fox\, agriculturalist\, ecopreneur\, and founder and managing director of Newark Science and Sustainability.\nArmando Cruz\, environmentalist\, community activist\, and animal and human rights advocate.\n\n       \nFebruary 13th\, at 10am – Essex-Hudson Ice & Iron Greenway Project – Speaker: \n\nDebra Kagan\, Executive Director of New Jersey Bike & Walk\n\n \nFebruary 13th\, at 11:30am – Keynote Speaker: Dr. Douglas Tallamy: Nature’s Best Hope\n \n\nVirtual tabling for registered groups will be available every day during the conference. SUMMARY:THE IMPORTANCE OF SOIL FERTILITY & APPROPRIATE USE OF FERTILIZATION
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nEven if you think that you have a green thumb\, this webinar will provide you alternatives to keep the soil of your garden healthy and fertilized using the appropriate method. \nMost of the time\, the average person treats the soil “like dirt”. A wise farmer/gardener will care for the soil because he/she knows that humanity  is dependent on the top 6 inches  of soil. In the plant-animal-soil continuum\, soil is often neglected because it does not indicate stress in an obvious way. Animals and plants show physical symptoms but the soil must be looked at more carefully to monitor good health. Soil is a living system\, with millions of microorganisms that keep the soil healthy. Just like other living things\, soil breathes and needs air\, water to stay alive. \nFertilization is an important issue because it is needed in order to produce enough food for the increasing population from the decreasing cultivated land\, but too much or  inappropriate use can be detrimental to the environment. Part of the debates about fertilizers discuss “man-made” or “chemical” fertilizers as compared to “organic farming”. There are many misconceptions about all three terms. This webinar will look at the various aspects of fertilization so a broader understanding will lead to better soil health and fertilization and results. \nThis is a free webinar\, but if you would like to support the program\, please click here:

SUMMARY:Community Story Telling Event: Kids Who Have Changed the World - Rescheduled to September 2023
DESCRIPTION:The Northeast Earth Coalition and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Oratory (St. Teresa Parish)\, and the Community Outreach Program\,  have partnered for this community storytelling event. Join us with your kids for this inspirational event. When it comes to making this world a better place\, we can see how our children can make a difference at any age. \nReaders will be sharing beautiful and inspirational stories about children who transformed our world by promoting social justice\, sustainability in economically disadvantaged communities\, race and gender equality\, and environmental protection. \nCome hear their amazing inspirational stories\, and your children may want to share their own!\nAmong the readings will be the story of Kelvin Doe\, one of Sierra Leon’s most famous inventors; Marley Dias\, the activist behind the #1000BlackGirlBooks twitter phenomenon; worldwide environmental activist Greta Thunberg. \nJaylen Arnold is one of the featured children. After being diagnosed with Tourette’s Syndrome\, Asperger’s and OCD\, Jaylen was bullied by peers. The bullying worsened the symptoms of his disabilities.  That led Jaylen to found the Jaylen Challenge Foundation\, which has educated more than 100\,000 kids on recognizing bullying behavior and understanding each other differences. \n \nAnother featured story is that of Malala Yousafzai\, who at 17 became the youngest Nobel Prize laureate for her humanitarian efforts and advocacy for women education. There is also Sophie Cruz\, who made a name for herself at five years old when she visited Washington D.C. with her family. Representing an L.A. based immigration advocacy group\, they delivered a letter to Pope Francis urging him to speak out on behalf of undocumented immigrants. The Pope discussed the issue in a meeting with Congress the following day\, and Cruz’s activism earned her a meeting with President Obama. \nAuditorium of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church\, 94 Pine Street\, Montclair\, NJ 07042\n GET YOUR TICKETS HERE: \n \nThe Northeast Earth Coalition is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt\, and volunteer driven non-profit organization. We do not receive public funding and rely on individual donations.  Help us to continue providing community support in northern New Jersey.
