SUMMARY:Community Story Telling Event: Kids Who Have Changed the World - Rescheduled to September 2023
DESCRIPTION:The Northeast Earth Coalition and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Oratory (St. Teresa Parish)\, and the Community Outreach Program\,  have partnered for this community storytelling event. Join us with your kids for this inspirational event. When it comes to making this world a better place\, we can see how our children can make a difference at any age. \nReaders will be sharing beautiful and inspirational stories about children who transformed our world by promoting social justice\, sustainability in economically disadvantaged communities\, race and gender equality\, and environmental protection. \nCome hear their amazing inspirational stories\, and your children may want to share their own!\nAmong the readings will be the story of Kelvin Doe\, one of Sierra Leon’s most famous inventors; Marley Dias\, the activist behind the #1000BlackGirlBooks twitter phenomenon; worldwide environmental activist Greta Thunberg. \nJaylen Arnold is one of the featured children. After being diagnosed with Tourette’s Syndrome\, Asperger’s and OCD\, Jaylen was bullied by peers. The bullying worsened the symptoms of his disabilities.  That led Jaylen to found the Jaylen Challenge Foundation\, which has educated more than 100\,000 kids on recognizing bullying behavior and understanding each other differences. \n \nAnother featured story is that of Malala Yousafzai\, who at 17 became the youngest Nobel Prize laureate for her humanitarian efforts and advocacy for women education. There is also Sophie Cruz\, who made a name for herself at five years old when she visited Washington D.C. with her family. Representing an L.A. based immigration advocacy group\, they delivered a letter to Pope Francis urging him to speak out on behalf of undocumented immigrants. The Pope discussed the issue in a meeting with Congress the following day\, and Cruz’s activism earned her a meeting with President Obama. \nAuditorium of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church\, 94 Pine Street\, Montclair\, NJ 07042\n GET YOUR TICKETS HERE: \n \nThe Northeast Earth Coalition is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt\, and volunteer driven non-profit organization. We do not receive public funding and rely on individual donations.  Help us to continue providing community support in northern New Jersey.

SUMMARY:Community Event: Compost Tea Demonstration & Garden Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a compost tea demonstration & garden tour of one of Montclair’s most visited ecological home gardens.\nDate: June 17\, 2023.\nTime: There will be two garden tours and compost tea demonstrations\, the first starting at 4:30pm and the second at 5:30pm.\nWhat to expect:\nJose German-Gomez\, environmentalist\, gardener\, and urban farmer\, has been experimenting over the past 15 years with different organic fertilization techniques including compost tea. Jose will provide a demonstration of how to make compost tea and discuss customizing compost tea recipes to your yard’s needs\, the use of beneficial nematodes. and other sustainable and eco-friendly gardening tips. \n \nDue to space limitations\, only 20 tickets will be available. The tour will be divided in two sessions to accommodate 10 people per tour. \nGarden profile:\nLocated on a 130’x 45’ lot on Grove Street near Montclair Center\, the garden is a sanctuary for pollinators and other wildlife. The homeowners started the garden 22 years ago\, and it now features over 120 different species of plants native to the Northeast. During a site visit a few years ago\, an entomologist from the New York Museum of Natural History identified 16 different species of native bees in the garden\, the most ever counted at a single site in Essex County. The garden is a certified Wildlife Habitat and a Monarch Waystation. Its vegetable garden supplies the homeowners with most of the veggies they eat in season. Over the years\, this garden has inspired visitors to create their own backyard habitats and vegetable gardens. \n \n \n \n
