Keynote Speaker: Dr. Douglas Tallamy

The Northeast Earth Coalition is honored to have Dr. Douglas Tallamy as our keynote speaker for the 6th Acting Locally for a More Sustainable World Conference.

Dr. Tallamy is a professor in the Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware, where he has authored eighty research articles and has taught Insect Taxonomy, Behavioral Ecology, Humans and Nature, and other courses for thirty-two years. Chief among his research goals is to better understand the many ways insects interact with plants and how such interactions determine the diversity of animal communities.

Tallamy’s award-winning first book Bringing Nature Home: How Native Plants Sustain Wildlife in Our Gardens, published in 2007, made the case for the key ecological role of native plants. His revolutionary 2020 follow-up book, Nature’s Best Hope, presents a grass-roots approach to conservation, emphasizing how anyone with access to a piece of land can take action to create essential habitat for insects and the wildlife that depends on them.

His message is solution-based action, where small efforts by many people in their yards or local public spaces can create new ecological networks connecting populations of plants and animals so they will have the resilience to survive and thrive.

Tallamy coined the term Homegrown National Park™ to describe this movement. According to Tallamy, “Our National Parks, no matter how grand in scale, are too small and separated from one another to preserve species to the levels needed. Thus, the concept for Homegrown National Park, a bottom-up call-to-action to restore habitat where we live and work, and to a lesser extent where we farm and graze, extending national parks to our yards and communities.

“In the past, we have asked one thing of our gardens: that they be pretty. Now they have to support life, sequester carbon, feed pollinators and manage water.”
— DOUG TALLAMY
