JOSE GERMAN GOMEZ

Introduction

Jose German Gomez is widely recognized as an environmental activist and educator dedicated to sustainable, eco-friendly communities and organic gardening. His passion and commitment have made a significant impact not only in northern New Jersey but also in communities across the United States and the Caribbean.

Education and Professional Background

Jose holds an MBA from the Inter-American University of Puerto Rico. His professional experience includes serving as the former Vice President of Finance at Cerebral Palsy of North Jersey (CPNJ), where he contributed his expertise to support a vital nonprofit organization. In addition to his business acumen, Jose is a certified Essex County Master Gardener, a certified Rutgers Environmental Steward, and a Duke Farm certified Master Ecologist, highlighting his dedication to environmental stewardship and lifelong learning.

Leadership and Community Involvement

Jose is the co-founder of the Montclair Backyard Habitat Project; an initiative affiliated with the National Wildlife Federation that encourages the creation of wildlife-friendly spaces in residential areas. He is also the founder of the Northeast Earth Coalition, a grassroots organization focused on environmental advocacy, sustainability, and community engagement.

His leadership extends into public service as a member of the Township of Montclair Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee and the Essex County Environmental Commission. Through these roles, Jose helps guide local environmental policies and fosters a deeper connection between people and nature in his community.

Education and Advocacy

A dedicated educator, Jose has presented his acclaimed lecture, “Gardening for Life,” throughout central and northern New Jersey, Loyola University, New Orleans (Louisiana), Wellesley/ Boston (Massachusetts), the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico. His lectures inspire individuals and communities to embrace sustainable gardening practices, emphasizing the importance of organic methods, biodiversity, and eco-friendly living.

Media Presence and Writing

Jose’s work has been featured in both local and national media, including Bird Watch and Municipal Magazine. As a thought leader in environmental issues, he maintains an active blog on environmental and urban farming topics. He also writes a regular column titled “Gardening for Life” for the Montclair Local Newspaper, where he shares insights, tips, and stories to motivate readers toward sustainable action.

Recognition and Awards

Jose’s tireless advocacy and community engagement have earned him numerous accolades. In 2022-2025, the New Jersey Latino Index honored him as one of the top ten most influential Latinos in New Jersey. His efforts were further recognized in 2023 when he received the Russ Berrie Making a Difference Award, celebrating his positive contributions to the environment and society.

His community work has also been acknowledged by New Jersey Peace Action, 2024. In April 2025, the New Jersey Senate and General Assembly presented Jose with a joint legislative resolution in recognition of his outstanding service and lasting impact on the community, in June 2025.
