Montclair Eco-Garden Bike Tour
July 29, 2023 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
Join us for this unique summer garden bike tour starting at 9:00am on July 29, 2023. The departure point is 27 Hillside Avenue at The Montclair Inn community garden. The tour will visit the following community gardens:
- The Montclair Inn. Located at 27 Hillside Avenue next to Hillside School, the Montclair Inn has a garden that provides fresh vegetables for the Inn’s residents, with surpluses donated to Toni’s Kitchen. It also has a composting station. There will be water and refreshments at this site.
- Sanctuary Community Garden. Located at 40 South Fullerton Avenue (front yard lawn of First Congregational Church), the Sanctuary Community Garden is a demonstration garden designed to inspire people to grow vegetables at home. This small fenced garden grows vegetables and herbs, with a pollinator garden surrounding the fence. Nearby on the church property, at the corner of Plymouth Avenue and South Fullerton, there is a new pollinator garden begun last fall.
- Crane Park Demonstration Garden. Located in Lackawanna Plaza (corner of Greenwood and Glenridge Avenues), this third-of-an-acre pocket park was transformed into a demonstration pollinator and bird garden beginning in 2017. The garden features more than 65 different species of native plants, most of them endemic to the Northeast. It is a National Wildlife Federation-certified Wildlife Habitat, a Monarch Waystation, and registered Pollinator Pathway site.
- Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Community Garden. Located at 94 Pine Street, this garden was created on top of the asphalt in the back of the church parking lot. It has 23 raised vegetable beds, a greenhouse, and a community composting station. The garden produced 1,450 pounds of vegetables last year and is on its way to set a new productivity record this year. There will be water and refreshments here.
